The process of becoming what we were at our origin is called enlightenment. Other terms describing the same process are illumination, awakening, self-realisation, samadhi & rebirth. Very few people are aware of such a process although the number is increasing steadily. For those who are aware of it, there is then a significantly low percentage of persons who want to dedicate time to study & to implement. Enlightenment is a gradual process of liberation from all material bondages & it is not a simple matter to tackle. It requires both self-discipline & support from a learned spiritual master to reach that height of consciousness. The focus of enlightenment is entirely on the expansion of the awareness of the human being. But how far is the human race conscious that consciousness is evolutive? This forms part of Universal Knowledge which becomes accessible at higher levels of meditation or by the grace of God/or the spiritual master. The majority of people believe that there is nothing to improve with regards to our energy levels & that in any case, we shall die one day- so we better make the most of all the available enjoyments. In spiritual jargon, this is called “material entanglement” & “ignorance”.
When we say that enlightenment is also illumination, then we are automatically inferring that there is the presence of darkness. Again, few of us are conscious of the varieties of darkness which are present in the human body. Another term regularly used for darkness in spiritual discourses is ignorance. Knowledge is the absence of ignorance. Therefore, the more we know, the less ignorant we are & the more illuminated we become. Knowledge is vast but I am here referring to spiritual knowledge, the light which removes a person from the shackles of darknesses. To be in ignorance is a dangerous situation but most people are not aware of its dangers for a human life. We are aware of material dangers such as the effects of viruses, drugs, car accidents, reduced safety at night & when alone, etc. It is worthwhile to understand what darknesses exist within us. Actually, all negative feelings are darknesses but all of them do not carry the same weight. The worst of all negative feelings is guilt. This feeling, whether validated or unreal generates highly impactful symptoms, which can last a whole lifetime. Next, we have fear, anxiety, paranoia, doubts, hesitation, lack of self-confidence, worry, impatience, restlessness, mistrust, impulsiveness, ignorance, negligence, anger, greed, lust, complacency, pride, attachment, arrogance, unwillingness to learn, grudge, lack of forgiveness, etc. As you can see the list is really long. It would seem we have more darkness than light- this is the bitter truth of the material world.
