One of the sacred & ancient books of Hinduism is the Bhagavad Gita. This is actually a conversation between Lord Krishna, the eighth Avatar of Shri Narayana & Arjuna on the battle field of Kurukshetra in India some 5000 years ago. The book consists of eighteen chapters which sheds light on life, on the human aspect, on the Divine aspect & addresses many questions that a spiritual aspirant may have. Such a book is not to read but to be studied with great discipline. Lord Krishna states that “one who reads the Bhagavad Gita is actually worshipping Me with his intelligence.”
I have personally enjoyed reading it, not as a Hindu but as a researcher & truly, it has answered most of my questions. And I have read it several times in order to gather fully its message & to recall the important lessons of life. Even Mahatma Gandhi informed that he has found a lot of power & inspiration whenever he was feeling low & discouraged. But as usual, everything is a matter of belief – we are what our mind is & our mind is our best friend and worst enemy. This is an infallible truth.
However, the complexity of all religious or spiritual knowledge lies not in its core and interpretation but in the implementation. This is where most people fail. I can safely affirm that the amount of knowledge in the Bhagavad Gita is so immense that if one does not have a clear plan on how to read & how to implement, then surely one shall not benefit from its richness. My personal experience was such that the more I read, the more I felt attracted like a magnet to it.
I recall when I started the motivational speeches in the temple hall at Camp Caval, Curepipe, I always brought the Bhagavad Gita with me. I even made extracts from the book & distributed copies to the audience. Gradually, we started charity to the poor & today, some of them have become vegetarian, pray everyday & even organise to attend early morning prayers at four in the morning. I have never imposed any instructions to my followers – I leave it to them to decide although I know the decider is actually God himself.
